So combining the instructions from the Caslon and Adana manuals with some advice from Briar Press discussion board, plus some photos of the process, here are my instructions for packing the platen on the Adana 8×5.

I believe the “flanges” you mention must be the roller trucks which ride on the edges of the bed and keep the rollers supported at the proper height, just like the roller trucks do on the upright presses.

In 1956 the first 3 x 5 Adana was unveiled. The machine replaced the HS/1 (High Speed 1) machine with its small chase of 3″ x 2″ inches. The 3 x 5 was supplied with a larger chase (2.25 x 4.25 inches) which allowed larger work to be printed, made of aluminium rather than previous versions which were made of cast iron, and so much heavier.
