We learn of Louise’s heart trouble in the story’s very first line: Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death. As the story progresses, however, we learn that her family needs to be worried about much more than just her physical symptoms.
The Story of an Hour Summary. Because of Mrs. Mallard’s heart condition, everyone basically tiptoes around her and treats her carefully. When her sister and family friend discover Mr. Mallard got killed in an accident, they take time to gently tell Mrs. Mallard that her husband has died.
