There is a way to become a good lich, the elves figured it out, but there was little written on how to become one.It really seems totally up to the DM on how to become one.Some sort of sacrifice seems appropriate even if only to stave off the fact that death is not getting one soul, so he should have one from something/someone.
In the role playing world in Pathfinder, our DM made it so our adventuring guild is run by a goodly necromancer who received the blessing of the god of magic for his heroic deeds centuries ago to become a goodly lich as long as he continues to fight against evil.
